After just four years in business, we have been recognised as one of the nation’s top 100 employers.
Importantly, the accolade is not based on statistics or the words of our senior management team – instead the Sunday Times made its award based on what our employees think. We’re rated on what they say about company processes, how well we communicate and manage change, how well we involve our people, develop their jobs and reward their efforts. Our employees rate us highly and this is reflected in our ability to attract and retain the most talented people within our business and ensures our ongoing success.
Credit where credit’s due
The Business & Enterprise Group believes in recognising and rewarding individual contribution. In order to attract the best people, we pay within the top quartile and provide a comprehensive benefits scheme, which includes healthcare, life insurance and even breakdown cover. This level of reward and recognition does not end once an employee joins the business. We want to retain the best people with the best skills and experience that ultimately benefit our customers. We do this through a number of methods; for example, we have a Reward and Recognition scheme which enables managers to use ‘on the spot’ rewards to recognise staff that go the extra mile. In addition to rewarding individual performance, we hold company-wide events such as the annual family barbeque to thank everyone for their contribution, as well as helping staff to stay healthy through the ‘Better Health at Work’ NHS programme.
One of the family
We recognise that our employees play an important role in developing our business and have put in place an Employee Benefit Trust. This further engages employees in our aims and objectives, by making them stakeholders in the Business & Enterprise Group.
Taking our people with us
Change, and adapting to it, is part of our culture. The organisation has witnessed a significant transformation over the last 12 months, which involved restructure, diversification and growth. Keeping our staff informed and engaged through regular business updates, workshops and the use of the Learning Map to tell our story about who we are and where we are going, are crucial in ensuring our people understand the challenges ahead and how they can contribute to enable us to navigate transformation successfully.
Communicating with our people is not just something we do at times of great change. We are constantly talking with, and listening to, our staff to ensure that they are happy and engaged in their roles and with the business as a whole. Our business benefits from their experience and all Business & Enterprise Group people have an important role to play as we develop and grow our business.
Making the best even better
Although we work hard to recruit the best, we are also committed to further developing staff through our People Development Programmes, which involve traditional training workshops, as well as e-learning. We have established a programme of leadership and management development, the Management Academy, which delivers a six to eight month training programme, including performance management, project management and negotiation skills, accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management, to deliver degree level qualifications.
It is this investment in our people which led us to achieve national recognition as an employer of choice, as demonstrated by the Investor in People Silver Standard awarded in 2009 and our recognition as a Best Company in 2010.
